60 Years in the Making

In 1954, a co-operative society was founded by a group of 100 grocers. It was called Allied Dublin Merchants Ltd (ADM Ltd). 1970 saw ADM Londis Ltd acquire the use of the Londis Franchise for Ireland and launched 33 of its existing stores under the Londis Franchise.

ADM Londis Ltd opened a Distribution Warehouse in Johnstown, Naas, Co. Kildare in 1975, and to reflect the expansion of business outside the Dublin area, changed their name to Allied Distributive Merchants Ltd.

In 1995, ADM Londis Ltd purchased the Londis brand name exclusively for the entire 32 counties and celebrated its 25th Anniversary in Ireland. The company then formed an alliance with Tedcastles Ltd to promote Londis TOP SHOP as a retail forecourt brand for stores of less than 2,000 sq. ft in 1998.

2003 saw the amalgamation of ADM Londis and Londis Topshop to become an increasingly powerful force in the Irish Retail Market, with a combined total of nearly 350 stores.

In October of 2004, ADM Londis announced a major change in its corporate structure from a co-operative to an unlisted plc. The plc initiative is a unique ADM Londis proposition to retailers within the symbol group arena in Ireland.

In October 2007, ADM Londis plc built a state of the art premises at Johnstown, Naas, Co Kildare. The location now houses the Group Support Office and 90,000 sq ft warehouse and distribution centre on one site, supporting Londis retailers nationwide.

In April 2008, ADM Londis plc announced it is strengthening its nationwide forecourt presence following an agreement with Texoil, Chevron Ireland’s largest Texaco branded oil distributor in Ireland. This forecourt presence will provide an estimated annual retail turnover of €50 million and create a total of 300 new jobs.

In October 2008, the Group launched a flagship store in Dublin Rd, Monaghan with its state of the art facilities including the Londis brands The Juiceberry Co, Plantation Coffee Co and Londis Fresh, representing true innovation for Londis in the Irish Retail Market.

In September 2009, ADM Londis reached agreement with the large UK wholesaler Nisa–Today’s to source a range of well known International branded products and a private label range which will ultimately place Londis retailers in a more competitive position in the grocery sector. Under the agreement, ADM Londis secured the future wholesaling rights in the Republic of Ireland for Nisa’s Heritage and Value private label brands.

In February 2010 ADM Londis launched iSIS, an innovative and intelligent on line ordering platform, in a move which revolutionised the way in which Londis retailers placed orders at store level. iSIS leverages up to the minute sales information at store level to radically improved a retailer’s ordering process. By identifying and prompting top sellers, promotional lines and other seasonal opportunities which may otherwise be overlooked in the ordering process, each Londis retailer is assured of a very focused product offering which closely mirrors what customers are demanding in his or her store.

In October 2011 ADM Londis became the first retail group in Ireland to use the iPAD as an integrated business tool, enabling extraordinary capabilities amongst its retailer base. The iPad allows retailers to access: Londis’ e-Wholesaling platform iSIS; category plans; their store’s Epos system for managing all back office functions; and a host of other applications enabling peer review, compliance checks, security monitoring, and even managing social media and emails, to name a few. And all accessible on the shop floor or remotely, from anywhere in the world, 24/7.

In June 2012 ADM Londis opened a Centralised Chilled warehouse which was over two years in planning. Marking a major strategic shift for the Group and its retailers, Londis retailers could now for the first time place their chilled orders directly with ADM Londis and receive these products in a timely and efficient single delivery, marking a major strategic shift for the Group and its retailers. Central to this programme is a €20m partnership agreement with warehousing and logistic experts Norbert Dentressangle.

In January 2015, it was announced that BWG Group, one of Ireland’s leading food wholesalers and retailers, made an offer of €23 million to acquire the trading business of ADM Londis. Londis is a complementary business to BWG’s existing multi-brand retail operations which comprise 1,175 SPAR, EUROSPAR, MACE and XL symbol stores throughout Ireland and the South West of the UK.

In June 2015, following completion of the deal, BWG has confirmed that it is committed to retaining and promoting the Londis brand and to investing in its future growth and development.
